When we pulled up to Colton’s favorite bar, he dropped me off out front so I wouldn’t have to walk in my heels. I waited outside, still wearing his jacket, as he went to find an empty parking space. After the swanky steakhouse, the bar wasn’t exactly what I had expected. It seemed like a real blue-collar place, and inside I could see plenty of blue jeans and cowboy hats. I supposed this sort of down-to-earth, country-boy atmosphere was the other aspect of Colton’s complex character.

As I waited, a man came out of the bar, sidling up next to me, offering me a cigarette. I declined, and he stood beside me lighting up his own. He took a puff and blew smoke out in my direction. I coughed to show my displeasure, but he simply wouldn’t leave me alone.

“You don’t look like you’re from around here,” he said with a somewhat malicious laugh, shooting me a cockeyed, sneering smile, if it could even be called a smile.

“You’re right, I’m from New York,” I said, trying to be as polite as possible, hoping he would just leave me alone.

“Oh, big city girl huh? A Yankee. What the hell are you doing in Texas?”

“I’m writing an article about the city of Houston,” I said, telling something of a half-truth, not wanting to give Colton up to this stranger.

“Oh, is that right? Well, honey, maybe I ought to take you home tonight? Give you a real good Texas fuckin’, you know what I mean. A real ‘taste of Houston’ for your article,” he laughed again, more creepily this time.

“I don’t think so,” I said nervously, not wanting to provoke this obviously drunk and crass man. Where the hell was Colton? I really shouldn’t have let him leave me alone outside this strange place.

“Oh, come on, a big girl like you, I bet you suck a good dick, don’t you?” The man pinched my ass to accentuate the word ‘big’ and I was mortified, almost on the edge of tears. What the fuck was going on?

“Hey, buddy, what the fuck are you doing?” yelled Colton, coming around the corner of the block and into eyesight.

“Oh, I’m just about to take this nice girl home with me,” said the man, giving Colton a sinister wink as he made another move at me.

“Colton, he grabbed my ass, the fuckin’ pervert,” I was practically crying, not knowing what was going on.

“Is what the young lady said true?” asked Colton.

“Yeah, is that a problem? She your girlfriend or somethin’?” asked the man, blowing smoke into Colton’s face.

“You ought to watch yourself, boss.”

“Oh yeah? How ‘bout I beat your ass right in front of her?” yelled the man, tossing down his cigarette on the sidewalk and smothering the charred tip with the heel of his boot.

“Buddy, you don’t want any trouble,” said Colton, trying to calm the situation down.

Then the man took a drunken swing, Colton dodged his fist with a simple head fake and came back with a punch of his own, hitting the man squarely in the jaw.
